Nina Simone was from Tryon, NC. An amazing musician, unafraid, honest, powerful. Some time ago I was doing a storytelling residency in upstate SC, feeling kind of alone after 2 weeks of travel from place to place. Drove into Tryon feeling isolated and then I saw this sculpture. It was Nina playing her keyboard. Being herself. And I felt like I had a friend. Strange? Maybe, but true.
