The inspiration for this painting came while watching a Sowei masquerade dance in Sierra Leone. The woman wearing the mask and raffia covering is responsible for the initiation of young women into the female Sande Society. I began to think of other acts of initiation, including the act of "seeking" which has been a part of African American religiosity, a crossing-over of sorts. This piece arose from those musings.
