My Sweetgrass Saints are ancestors who lived and worked in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Robert Smalls was born enslaved in Beaufort, SC, but he gained his freedom when he commandeered a Confederate ship and escaped. After the war he became a land owner, a general and a SC State Representative. The original is acrylic on 8" x 10" canvas, and is framed in a gold wooden frame.
