Spirit of Bunce Island Gourd Art
This Gourd was inspired by my family's visit to Bunce Island at the beginning of this year. This was the slave fortress off the coast of Sierra Leone, West Africa. I was awed by the massive trees and the way they were slowly tearing the fortress down. There were white butterflies everywhere. I could hear my husband singing from inside the walls and what I felt was a sense of peace. That the ancestor's were there in spirit, that in time all would be well.
This piece is painted with acrylic, stitched with cotton cord. It is lined with hand-painted paper. The figure inside is paper mache and clay. In her gold bowl is a pine nut I picked up on Bunce Island. There is also a little light inside that can be activated to cast a glow on her.
