I wanted to make a gourd that looked like mud cloth, so I started with the pattern. Initially I was going to put a bead or knob on top. But one morning I decided to sculpt something instead. And there, in my hands, was a mini-bust of my grandmother, Elizabeth! I loved this woman. She was my ride and die, my cheer leader, my friend, my comfort and my inspiration. I added her to the top and then, just a few days ago, I decided to add the cowrie shells. Perfect!
Painted with acrylic, stitched with cotton cord, lined with paper and gold leaf, with clay, wire and cowrie shells. 7" high and 6" in diameter
