Saint Charlotte - Sweetgrass Saints Series
12" x 18" print. Charlotte Forten was the first Black instructor at the Penn Freedman's School on St. Helena Island, SC. She was an ardent abolitionist and 4th generation free woman who came down from Philadelphia to make her belief in equality a reality. It was 1862, The Civil was was still raging. Charlotte was the first to collect the songs we call "spirituals." She was young and committed.
